Dual Immersion Program
Dual Immersion
Give your child a head start on learning a second language!
• Multiple research studies have demonstrated the significant cognitive benefits derived from early language learning.
• Learning a second language is natural for young children.
• Dual Immersion prepares students for foreign language requirements in high school and college, including the Advanced Placement exams and to earn the Seal of Biliteracy upon High School graduation.
• Spanish is spoken in over 20 different countries, including the U.S., and by almost 400 million people.
• Speaking another language can significantly increase the potential long-term educational and career benefits which multilingual students accrue.
• Knowing another language can enhance travel and cultural experiences.
• Bilingualism promotes critical and creative thinking.
Program Goals
- Bilingualism: Students will achieve high levels of proficiency in a new language while maintaining their primary language.
- Biliteracy: Students will achieve a high level of proficiency in English and Spanish literacy skills.
- Cultural Competencies: Students will learn about other cultures and cultivate an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures.
How it Works
Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science are taught in English and Spanish to develop students' academic knowledge and communication skills in both languages. In this unique opportunity to acquire two languages, while learning the California standards curriculum, students who speak either English or Spanish can participate in this exciting and enriching instruction. In transitional kindergarten and kindergarten, students are immersed 90% of the instructional time in Spanish and 10% in English. In the first grade, students are immersed 80% of the instructional time in Spanish and 20% in English. In the second grade, students are immersed 70% of the instructional time in Spanish and 30% in English. In the third grade, students are immersed 60% of the instructional time in Spanish and 40% in English. In the fourth and fifth grades, students are immersed 50% of the instructional time in Spanish and 50% in English. In TK through the third grade, students are taught by one classroom teacher whereas two teachers, an English model and a Spanish model, work with two classes in the fourth and fifth grades to provide a bilingual experience. Students help each other to speak, read, write, and understand one another's language.
