Required Courses
English 6 (Required Course) This is a systematic literature-based course that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade language arts. It integrates reading, written and oral language, and spelling. This is done through core literature books, a literature anthology, a spelling textbook, and a grammar textbook.
Social Studies 6 (Required Course) This course is aligned with the California State Standards for sixth grade social science. The course covers history and geography of ancient civilizations including prehistoric people and the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome.
Reading 6 (Required Course) This course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade language arts. The course specifically covers the reading standards.
Dual Immersion Core (Optional Course in lieu of regular English 6/Social Studies 6/Reading 6--Must be currently enrolled in DI program) The dual immersion core classes cover the same material as regular core; however, social science is taught in Spanish.
Math 6 (Required Course) This course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade mathematics. The areas of emphasis include number sense, algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, statistics, data analysis and probability, and mathematical reasoning.
Accelerated Math 6/7A (Optional Course in lieu of Math 6--Must be qualified via District Math Matrix) In this course, students will develop their understanding of proportional relationships, equations, and geometry at an accelerated rate. Successful completion of this course and Math 7B/8 (7th grade course) will qualify the student to register for Algebra 1 as an 8th grader. This course is offered to students who qualify according to the district’s math placement matrix.
Science 6 (Required Course) This course is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards for sixth grade science. Students will learn about cells and living systems, earth systems including water cycle and weather/climate, global warming and human impacts, and energy and matter.
Physical Education (Required Course) This course is aligned with the California State Standards for sixth grade physical education. Students will participate in a program emphasizing active participation, fitness, and motor development. Proper physical education attire is required. A recommended uniform is for sale at registration.
Elective Courses (Optional)
Band (Optional Course--Students will be required to take a “0” period class) In this beginner-level course, students will be playing woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. The school may provide instruments for students playing French horn, trombone, baritone horn, or tuba. All other instruments should be provided by the student. Attendance at all performances is required.
Orchestra (Optional Course--Students will be required to take a “0” period class) In this beginner-level course, students will be playing a stringed instrument. The school may provide instruments for students playing viola, cello, or bass. All other instruments should be provided by the student. Attendance at all performances is required.
Vocal Music (Optional Course--Students will be required to take a "0" period class) This is an elective course designed to introduce students to the musical concepts of tone, pitch, rhythm, and music reading. This course will offer students the opportunity to learn the basics of vocal production. As members of a choral ensemble students will be exposed to a variety of music styles. Attendance at all performances is required.
